Description

Hi everyone,

This is my first post to GFX Artist, thanks for having me! This image went through a few programs on its way to being finished - Maya for the trees, zBrush for the pods, Bryce for a water/reflection render, tons of Photoshop painting and texturing, plus the use of a few royalty free stock photos (the monk and boat are seperate shots, composited and heavily painted). All told I think it was about a week's work. Thanks for taking the time to look, all the best,

Phil

:)
nice idea...i like the shapes but i think its a bit too bright...u should make more deeper shadows to it
i like the sky as well.another thing is the border between the sea and mountains in the bottom right part...its a bit too sudden for my taste..also i can see some blue colour...i dont understand from where thats supposed to come..eh...dont blame a girl from not being able to see in depth
i hope this helps a bit, it has potential:)

Thank you cigaro! Very much appreciated. I take all your points, I felt the image was a tad too bright myself, but I wanted to keep as much detail as I could and still capture a 'moonlit' feel. The dark area in the bottom right is a forest line against the water, maybe that isn't coming through well enough. Thanks so much for the crit!

Avatar Cigaro

 02/26/06 @915

yes i realized it was the forest line but i think it needs to be lighted...from the light source i see(moon) the lights need to be reversed...therefore the backside of the tree should be lighted and the front one(the one we see) should be more shaded:) same goes for the forest:)
or more simply you could consider putting a light source in the front(as in for example where im standing and looking at it right now)
anywayz, you woll preserve details...real nice ones btw;)

I agree with Cigaro, its really to bright, all the white und blue, i miss the myth of the moonlight.... the mood, you know... and also i think all the fog, structure in the sky is a bit to much....

i really love the tree, water, boat... tuned the sky a bit to discreet, give them more deep... that ´s what i think ;)

the modelling looks real good but the whole image seems like a composite. there's no feeling of depth/atmosphere.

still good thou

incoherent... lighting and colours dont fit.
its to bright and the photobackground... :-X
kudos for the idea but the compositing still needs alot of work

Man, you guys certainly don't pull any punches. Which is the whole point I guess. Thanks for taking the time to post, Uncle Xen - could you elaborate a little on what is 'incoherent'? I'd appreciate it. I realise the left side of the structure needs to be darkened down considerably - but what else? Thanks.

PS Uncle Xen - your image, Beastmistress, is stunning - particularly for me at the moment, as I'm reading The Liveship Traders trilogy from Robin Hobb (highly recommended!) - your scene could be a scene from the third book - amazing.

Wow!! I'm impressed! I absolutely LOVE the sky! (even if it is a bit right in parts) and the section right above your guy in the boat is a little too dark I think, maybe some shadows of the coastline or something may be good there, but really, a very nice first post and a great job considering all that the image has been through :)
looking forward to more!

I agree about the brightness.
But otherwise very intresting model and great atmosphere.

Avatar Charkocu

This is beautiful. Unlike others, I think that crazy atmosphere works great.

The only thing that looks off is the base of the tree-island. It is a straight line across when I would think it would be a bit rounded, for perspective.

You did well with using many tools for one piece. Keep it up.

hi, great detail and very creative piece! I guess the others are right about depth and ligthing. To my feeling the whole tree has the same brightness, maybe you can make one side more shadowy and maybe you can darken the mountains in the back and the sky and lighten up the forest in front of the mountains. I'm not an expert, just my feeling ;) I wish I could make drawings like you lol goodluck!

Very cool, although it's a little too bright at the top.

I hadn't seen this one from you before.

As usual your sense of scale and depth is employed with wonderful skill. My only comment is that the sky is a bit too busy considering the tree-like growth in the foreground. The sky is competing with the tree and makes it a bit difficult to really focus on it - and the tree ultimately is the subject of the piece.

Overall, however, you've done an excellent job!
